I found out that adding a bird bath mister or dripper really helps. In my zone 7b garden, the sun is extremely hot and the puddle dries out very quickly! Hummingbirds love the misters. And one cow pattie added to the mud mix is a big hit. Yes, I ask farm friends for a single pattie. :D The puddles really do work though. It's interesting. The bees and butterflies seem to work out a deal - bees on one side, butterflies on the other. I'm also hoping to expand it a bit because birds use the mud in spring for nesting.

I'd never heard of these butterfly puddles before. They are great idea. I shall be adding a couple to my garden this year to see what happens

I have three puddle dishes in the gardens and every one of them is used throughout the summer. I've never tried the fruit, although the local zoo has a butterfly habitat with puddle dishes and fruit and they're successful. I'm hoping to get pictures of our visitors this year to record in my garden journal...not sure why I never thought to do that before!

I have seen them eat dead bugs, feed off animal carcass and scat. They seem to be beautiful scavengers.
